Gothic carved in wood

Description

This is the late medieval gothic portal carved in wood in the Cistercian church of St. Bartholomew in Mogiła, Kraków (Poland). It is a unique example of wooden gothic architecture and its style resembles the decoration of gothic portals made of stone or brick. On both sides of the portal there are coats of arms of the Odrowąż family who were prominent members of medieval Polish nobility and were important patrons of the Cistercian Order. The portal is framed by a delicately carved, gothic inscription which recalls that the church of St. Bartholomew was built in 1466 by Master Mathew Mączka, a royal woodcarver and carpenter from Kraków, for the Cistercian abbot of Mogiła abbey, Peter. Most likely it is a second or third wooden church on this site because historical documents mention the Cistercian parish of St. Bartholomew already in 1266 and 1347. The surviving structure is unusually large and is the only preserved wooden church in Poland with three naves: its central nave is separated from two side naves by a wooden gothic arcade with pointed arches. The reason for its size may have been that the church was a minor pilgrimage site as surviving documents record that pilgrims praying inside received indulgencies for their sins. Overall, I think that the church and its portal may serve as a reminder that much of medieval architecture was executed in wood, not stone, and that most of that heritage is lost. If you are interested in wooden gothic, let me know, I have some other photos of wooden gothic portals but I am not sure if people would find it interesting.
