Description
This is the ceiling of the main tower of the cathedral of St. David in Southern Wales (UK). In the later medieval period, the cathedral was a major pilgrimage site of the region. It is said that two pilgrimages to St. David’s were equal to one pilgrimage to Rome. It is a biggest ecclesiastical site in Wales with a ruined palace of local bishops, a gate and large parts of medieval walls, still preserved. The cathedral itself was rebuilt a number of times but large parts of it still date to the medieval period. Of special interest are medieval effigies of Welsh lords (for example Rhys Gryg, Rhys ap Gruffydd or bishop Iorwerth).
