These are the arches of the Islamic palace of Aljaferķa in Zaragoza, located in modern north-eastern Spain to the far north from Andalusia. This was the capital of the taifa of Zaragoza which was a Muslim state formed after the fall of the caliphate of Cordoba in the north-eastern parts of its former territory. Local rulers cherished the tradition and culture of the caliphate but, without the unifying strength of a caliph, they could not resist the attacks from the radical Almoravid dynasty from Africa and the Christian kingdoms to the north. Monuments of their unique culture however, survived and influenced the traditions of this region for the next hundreds of years.

PS. In general I am not a great fan of photo editing programs, I like to see the monuments exactly as they are but this time I tried to add some more contrast to this photo, not sure if I am very happy with it but I do hope you like it!

Well done! In my opinion, the Aljaferķa is really underestimated. I visited it last year but it was at night and I didn't have time to stay in Zaragoza, but I'll go as soon as I can.
I totally agree about what you said in the description, I dislike the Almoravid dynasty for what they did and the only thing I like about the Almohad dynasty is actually it's architecture like the Giralda and how it influenced Nasrid architecture. Religious tolerance deteriorated under the Almoravids and the Almohads. The persecutions forced mozarabs to flee to the north and many Jews were massacred.

Well said! The most famous monuments of Islamic art and architecture are located in the Southern Spain and Zaragoza often get overlooked becouse of this, to be honest when I decided to go there I was not really aware how much of the Islamic palace is preserved in Aljaferia. Also, I agree with your opinion about Almohad architecture, I have seen only a couple of its examples with my own eyes but it certainly looks very beautiful. Still, the lack of tolerance and slave trade puts me off a bit, Umayad Caliphate and the smaller taifas work for my imagination a bit more thou this is just my subjective opinion... Anyway, thank you very much for taking your time to write a comment, I really appreciate this and I am glad this photo cought your attention, Thank you very much again!

I am glad you think so! Zaragoza is very beautiful with a lot of Roman, Islamic and medieval monuments :) It is not the most famous of medieval cities of Spain but still, it is worth visiting - Thank you for taking your time to comment! I really appreciate it!

I am happy you think so! There are some theories that this type of architecture influenced the development of gothic and tracery in Europe some 200 years ago... To be honest I do not think this is true but still, it does work for imagination :)
