Heritage of Byzantium

This is the church of St. Theodore. One of a number of medieval churches still standing among the ruins of the Byzantine city of Mystras in modern Greece. This was one of the last Byzantine strongholds to fell to the Ottoman Turks in the second half o the 15th century. Although depopulated today, it still stands as a powerful testimony to the Byzantine cultural revival in the period when the 1000 year old Eastern Roman Empire was facing its ultimate downfall.
