Heritage of Byzantium by BricksandStones Heritage of Byzantium by BricksandStones
This is the church of St. Theodore. One of a number of medieval churches still standing among the ruins of the Byzantine city of Mystras in modern Greece. This was one of the last Byzantine strongholds to fell to the Ottoman Turks in the second half o the 15th century. Although depopulated today, it still stands as a powerful testimony to the Byzantine cultural revival in the period when the 1000 year old Eastern Roman Empire was facing its ultimate downfall.

I don't even know that those kind of Church exist.

Well, they are preserved mainly in the east - from Balkans through north Africa to Mesopotamia, Iraq and Armenia. Russian churches are quite similar too... Anyway thanks for the comment!

To me, and I say this with 15 years of study of Greek and Roman history - So don't think of this as a half baked opinion - This is a monument to the dangers of abandoning your own religion, philosophy and indeed deities.

The stagnation that the roman empire fell to as Christianity infiltrated its provinces and people is nothing short of horrifying.

It would seem that a cult dedicated to the values of righteous dictators and self loathing was ultimately unfit to unite what we now call Europe.

Please feel free to disagree and I will happily respond to critiques and polite responses.

I couldn't disagree more. The Eastern Roman Empire survived for 1,100 years, when it fell it was not due to the religion of its people but multiple socio-political factors.
