This is a palm-tree vault in the apse of the church of the Dominican monastery in Toulouse (Conventuel des Jacobins, southern France). The Dominican order was introduced to Toulouse by St. Dominic himself in the early 13th century and the construction of the monastery with a church, cloisters, chapter house, and a refectory was carried on until early 14th century. The monastic church represents the Languedoc gothic style of architecture and is made entirely out of brick with two characteristic, equally high naves separated by just one row of columns. It is here that the tomb of the famous Dominican monk, a philosopher and thinker Thomas Aquinas is located.

Ps. To my utter surprise, the only information about the tomb of Thomas Aquinas within this church was an A4 printed sheet of paper attached to a string just next to it. It is a very beautiful place nonetheless.

Palm tree ... which reminds me, and especially since you study something along the line... have you ever been to Auxerre? The 'basement' of the Abbey of Saint-Germain? I heard (and saw) about palm-trees there, too.

Unfortunately the only places in France I have ever been to is Paris, Carcassonne and Toulouse. I really should visit Auxerre one day... Especially after viewing your beautiful gallery I really feel I should visit France and Germany again before going somewhere more distant like Rhodes or Turkey. Perhaps in my studies I focused too much on distant, frontier regions and not enough on the ‘core’ regions
Palm vaults are indeed very beautiful, one of my favorite type of vault really although I think they are rarely used in the construction of main naves. Chapels with single column in the middle, Chapter houses and refectories or cellars are often seen as more suitable for that type of vault… Anyway thank you very much for the comment! I am really glad this photo cought your attention!

In German we have that saying "Warum in die Ferne schweifen, wenn das Gute liegt so nah". :-D

Auxerre is nothing special as a city, but it's two major churches are really something. The one of the abbey is only a museum now, and therefore closed one day a week (as I had to find out this year, I think it's a tuesday).

Have a look around here for more info: [link]
Right now it's off the air, though, my provider seems to have problems today :-[

Surely an outstanding sight and even though it bears many similarities with other gothic churches, it has something destinctly unique about it. Wonderful capture as well

I am glad you think so! It is true that after seeing many medieval churches they may seem a bit repetitive so I try to add their distinct histories or architectural elements to make it more interesting. I not always manage so I am really glad you like this photo! Thank you very much for taking your time to comment on it! I seriously appreciate it, especially when comment is longer than two words like the one from you. Thank you again and sorry for late response!

Wow ... entirely out of brick? Must have been a hell of a job!

I bet it was :) ! I used to think that brick gothic was a specialization of the Baltic region where red brick castles and churches are more common [link] [link] but the skill with which brick (more orange than red) was used in Italy and Southern France is also quite amazing. Anyway thank you very much for taking your time to comment, I really appreciate it and also I apologise for late reply! Thanks again!
