These are the ruins of the gothic Benedictine abbey located on top of one of the cliffs above the North Sea in Whitby (UK). The site is very famous as on this very location, count Dracula, the vampire nobleman from Transylvania is said to have landed at the end of his long journey from Carpathian Mountains in Central Europe to Britain. Even today, numerous admirers of this story visit Whitby exchanging stories how the erosion of the sea cliffs around the abbey revealed numerous coffins and bodies buried there in the medieval period.... Although I have not seen any of these, there might be an element of truth in this story as certainly, numerous tombs and bodies must be still buried within this ruined church and it its proximity.
Historically Whitby was once a very important cultural, intellectual and religious centre of the northern England. It was here when in the 7th St. Hilda has called a synod (religious meeting) during which the Saxon king of Northumbria named Oswiu and all the leading ecclesiastics of his realm adopted the Roman method of calculating Easter and rejected the method used in the monastery of Iona which was a major religious centre for Scotland as well as for the northern England. The decision is considered an important event because according to most interpretations it shows the determination of English Christians to maintain their links with Europe and other parts of the former Roman Empire even after most of the Roman institutions in the West have collapsed. Obviously, the monastery was destroyed many times since the 7th C. (Vikings, dissolution of monasteries etc.) and all that remains today are the ruins of a much later gothic church constructed on the site after the Norman Conquest.
I am glad you like it! Thank you very much for the comment! To be honest I wanted to add something from Whitby for a long time but it is such a popular location that most of my photos from there seemed very repetitive. They just copied images that were already widely available online… I was hoping this would be at least slightly more original… Anyway, thank you very much once again (and sorry for late response)!
I am glad you like it It is always especially pleasurable to get a positive comment from someone who actually lives in the country where give photo was taken so thank you very much! I really appreciate it!
Thank you!
